An AVM, cerebral arteriovenous malformation, is present at birth in the blood vessels of the brain, brainstem or spinal cord. It is a complex, tangled web of high-pressure arteries abnormally connected directly to thin-walled veins. This interferes with circulation and can cause hemorrhages.
